Seeing the Vision Come To Life

One of our goals with this Journal is to share not only our successes, but also the learning experiences that bring us one step closer to opening our doors. The past few days have been some of the busiest so far- and most rewarding-since we began this journey.

The day before touring our first potential facility, we met with a mentor from the New York Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to review our business plan and discuss where Barbell Battalion is headed. While our business plan is still a work in progress, our mentor shared that this was one of the strongest first consultations he had experienced in the past three years. That feedback was encouraging, but even more valuable were the recommendations on where to continue improving. We know we don’t have all the answers, and we’re committed to listening, learning, and seeking guidance from those with experience. Building a successful business isn’t about pretending to know everything—it’s about continually growing and making better decisions.

The meeting also reinforced something we’ve believed from the beginning: dividing responsibilities based on each of our strengths is the right approach. Every conversation, every revision, and every piece of constructive feedback helps us refine our vision and build a stronger foundation for the future.

The following day, we toured our first commercial property in Saratoga Springs. Walking into an empty office building may not sound exciting at first, but as we looked around, it became easy to imagine what the space could become. We found ourselves picturing where competition combo racks could stand, where deadlift platforms could be installed, how a turf area could fit into the layout, and how we could create a space that welcomes both competitive powerlifters and everyday gym-goers. Instead of simply seeing empty rooms, we saw possibilities.

One of the biggest surprises was learning that the property owners were open to allowing us to modify the existing floor plan. That flexibility immediately changed how we viewed the building. While the current layout includes six bathrooms—split evenly between men’s and women’s facilities—we quickly realized that converting two of them into additional training space would allow for a much better equipment layout. The remaining larger restroom spaces also offer the opportunity to add showers and urinals in the future, giving us room to grow without sacrificing functionality on opening day.

Beyond the gym floor itself, the building offered opportunities we hadn’t fully appreciated until seeing it in person. Separate rooms could eventually serve as classrooms for educational seminars, quieter consultation spaces for coaches and clients, or meeting areas for community events. It reminded us that Barbell Battalion has always been about more than equipment—it’s about creating an environment where people can learn, connect, and grow together.

These experiences also reinforced another important lesson: we aren’t committed to any one property just because we’ve toured it. We still plan to visit additional locations before making any decisions. Every tour helps us better understand the realities of opening a facility—what construction may involve, what renovations could cost, and what opportunities different spaces offer. Even if this isn’t the location we ultimately choose, it has already been an invaluable learning experience.

In addition to planning the facility itself, we’re continuing to work on ways to build the financial foundation needed to make this vision a reality. One exciting step is the launch of our online merchandise store. While every purchase helps us build our capital fund, it’s also an opportunity for people to show support for a business that is committed to giving back to its members and the surrounding community. We’re still learning what people want, gathering feedback, and refining our offerings along the way—just as we are with every other part of Barbell Battalion.

Looking back, these past few days have been filled with long hours, new challenges, and plenty of learning. It’s exactly what we expected when we committed to this journey, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see our ideas slowly becoming more tangible. Every meeting, every property tour, every revision, and every conversation brings us one step closer to opening our doors.
